Keep Your Favorite Pieces Sparkling All Summer Long
As temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, it's important to give your fine jewelry the extra care it deserves. Warmer weather brings sun, sweat, saltwater, and sunscreen—all of which can affect the appearance and longevity of your favorite pieces.
Whether you're headed to the beach, attending summer weddings, or just enjoying the sunshine, here’s how to keep your jewelry looking its best through the heat.
Sunscreen and moisturizers are essential for skin protection—but not so great for your jewelry. These products can build up on metals and stones, dulling their sparkle and causing residue buildup over time. Likewise, sweat contains natural oils and acids that can wear down finishes and cause tarnish.
Apply sunscreen and lotions before putting on your jewelry, and make sure everything is dry before wearing your pieces. After a long day in the sun, wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth to remove residue.
Chlorine and saltwater are two of the biggest culprits behind damaged summer jewelry. Chlorine can discolor white gold, weaken prongs, and damage gemstones, while saltwater can erode finishes and cloud stones.
Leave your fine jewelry behind when swimming or spending extended time in the water. If you forget, rinse your jewelry in clean water and dry it thoroughly afterward.
Warm weather and humidity can increase the chance of tarnish—especially for sterling silver. Exposure to moisture can also loosen gemstone settings over time.
Keep your jewelry stored in a cool, dry place, ideally in individual soft-lined boxes or pouches to prevent scratches and reduce exposure to air and humidity.
Between sunscreen, sweat, sand, and outdoor activities, your jewelry will need more frequent cleanings during the summer months.
For diamond and gold jewelry, use a gentle jewelry cleaner or a mix of Windex and hydrogen peroxide. Soak your pieces briefly, then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and pat dry with a clean, soft cloth.

From gardening and biking to beach volleyball and hiking—active summer days can put your jewelry at risk. Rough contact and hard surfaces can scratch metals or loosen stones, and you may not even notice until it’s too late.
If you’re headed out for physical activity, remove rings, bracelets, and other delicate pieces beforehand. Consider wearing simpler, more durable styles if you still want to accessorize.
With just a few mindful habits, you can keep your favorite pieces looking brilliant through the hottest months of the year. At Israel Diamond Supply, we offer professional cleanings, repair services, and expert advice to help you care for every piece in your collection.
